History
-in French Wars > Third French War (1847-54) Portuguese defeated and forced out of Bahia
-also Amapa put under French control
-this in turn results in Grao-Para seeing growing development centered around Belem
-as Portugal tries to take full advantage of its remaining lands
-faced with growing French encroachment on the Amazon basin, decides to make it accessible to all countries
-results in the US making a huge presence in the era
-India rubber craze sparked by rise of Telegraphy > Submarine cables, Velocipedes, which use them
-in 1860s, rubber uses spark upwards massively, inspires production in many places incl. Grao-Para
-massive amounts of slave labor occurs in this rising trade
-both of black and indigenous slaves
-canals, railroads created to bring out rubber
-due to import of slaves from Africa, France tries to cut it off through various slave raids, forces Portugal to look elsewhere France's Wars > Franco-Portuguese War (1871-2)
-slave trade from southern US, which replaces this, this only cut off by Liberty and Union War (1868-76)
-after ACW ends, Richmondite exiles leave, many to Grao-Para
-there's already been a pretty impressive amount of Southron settlement
-with Antillean War (1880-4) there's another massive barrage of southern settlement

-however, Portuguese government becomes suspicious that they seek their own independence
-in 1889 Portugal sends an expedition to maintain order in area
-however, opposed by the Richmondite settlers
-result is declaration of independence by settlers
-they succeed against pretty feeble Portuguese forces
-sign an alliance with Empire of the German Nation in return for rubber trading
-with French Wars > Fifth French War (1892-5) there is very nearly an Anglo-French invasion
-but France doesn't want expansion of British influence, and Portugal is defended
-however, postwar there is a massive controversy
-brutal rubber trade, complete with chopped hands
-US organizes campaign against this, culminates in International Interventions > Intervention in Grao-Para (1897-8)
